In a season filled with standout performances and electric moments, Notre Dame freshman guard Hannah Hidalgo has emerged not just as a rising star—but as the nation’s very best. On Tuesday, Hidalgo was named the Sporting News National Player of the Year, a remarkable recognition for a first-year player who’s already changing the game.
Standing just 5-foot-6, Hidalgo has defied expectations since her debut. Known for her relentless defense, fearless drives, and infectious energy, she led the Fighting Irish in points, steals, and assists during a season that brought Notre Dame back into national prominence. But her impact goes beyond the stats.
“She plays with a fire that ignites the whole team,” head coach Niele Ivey said. “Hannah brings a level of passion and intensity that you just can’t coach. She makes everyone around her better.”
That fire has deep roots. Hidalgo, a New Jersey native, grew up in a basketball family and credits her parents and older siblings for instilling her fierce work ethic. “They never let me settle,” she said in a recent interview. “They taught me that greatness comes from pushing yourself when no one’s watching.”
It’s that drive that helped Hidalgo become the face of a resurgent Notre Dame program. Averaging over 20 points per game while ranking among the national leaders in steals, she quickly became a fan favorite for her hustle plays and unshakable confidence.
For Hidalgo, the award is humbling. “To be recognized like this—it’s surreal,” she said. “I’ve looked up to so many of the past winners. To have my name on that list means the world, but it also motivates me to keep going.”
With her freshman season complete, Hidalgo is already looking ahead. “This is just the beginning,” she said, smiling. “I want to bring a championship back to South Bend.”
