Dawn Staley has solidified her position as one of the most influential figures in women’s basketball, both on and off the court. In January 2025, she made history by signing a $25.25 million contract extension with the University of South Carolina, making her the highest-paid coach in women’s college basketball. The deal includes a $4 million annual salary, a $500,000 signing bonus, and a $250,000 annual raise through the 2029–30 season .

Since taking the helm in 2008, Staley has transformed the Gamecocks into a national powerhouse, leading them to six Final Four appearances and three NCAA championships (2017, 2022, 2024). Under her leadership, the team achieved a perfect 38-0 season in 2024, becoming only the 10th undefeated team in women’s college basketball history .

Beyond her coaching success, Staley is a trailblazer for women in sports. As the highest-paid Black female coach in NCAA history, her contract reflects a growing recognition of women’s contributions to athletics. She has also invested in Unrivaled, a professional women’s 3-on-3 basketball league known for offering the highest average salaries in women’s sports .

Staley’s influence extends to her former players, such as Aliyah Boston, who views her as a mentor and advocate for women’s sports. Boston credits Staley with being a “second mom” and appreciates her continued support even after Boston’s transition to the WNBA .
