In a full-circle moment steeped in loyalty, grit, and crimson pride, Rashard Odomes is returning to where it all began. The former Oklahoma standout has been named the new head coach of the University of Oklahoma men’s basketball team—an appointment that not only excites fans but inspires a new generation of Sooners.
Odomes, 28, played for Oklahoma from 2015 to 2019 and was known for his tenacious defense, physicality, and relentless work ethic. Though he wasn’t the flashiest player on the court, teammates and fans alike admired his blue-collar mentality—a trait that now defines his coaching style.
“It’s surreal,” Odomes said during his introductory press conference, eyes glistening. “This university shaped me not just as a player, but as a man. To be trusted with leading the program I love is the greatest honor of my life.”
After wrapping up his collegiate career, Odomes played professionally overseas before transitioning into coaching, where he quickly made a name for himself as an innovative tactician and a player’s coach. He served as an assistant at mid-major powerhouse Murray State before returning to OU as an associate head coach last season. His connection to players, dedication to culture, and deep understanding of what it means to wear “Sooner” across your chest made him a natural successor.
University athletic director Joe Castiglione called the hire a “homegrown decision rooted in passion, purpose, and progress.” He added, “Rashard embodies what this program is about—heart, hard work, and humility.”
Current and former players have rallied around the announcement, with many taking to social media to express their excitement and admiration for their former teammate and mentor. “Coach O brings the energy and culture we need,” tweeted OU guard Tre Holloway.
As Odomes steps into this new chapter, one thing is clear: he’s not just coaching a team—he’s leading a family. And for him, it’s not just a job. It’s coming home.
