August 17, 2025 Cincinnati, OH What was supposed to be a routine Bengals training camp practice quickly escalated into a heated moment when rookie defensive lineman Malik Turner knocked down franchise quarterback Joe Burrow, sparking a fiery confrontation with several veteran teammates.
The incident unfolded during a padded team drill late in practice. Burrow, who has been cautiously monitored following a string of past injuries, dropped back to pass when Turner broke through the offensive line with an aggressive rush. Instead of pulling up as is standard in non-contact drills the rookie made full contact, sending the quarterback sprawling to the turf.
Within seconds, offensive linemen Jonah Williams and Ted Karras rushed toward Turner, shoving the rookie away from Burrow and exchanging sharp words. Several players from both sides had to be separated before the situation calmed down. Burrow, meanwhile, got back on his feet and appeared unhurt, waving off concerns as he adjusted his helmet and jogged back into the huddle.
Head coach Zac Taylor addressed the incident after practice, making it clear that protecting the quarterback is non-negotiable. We understand our rookies are eager to prove themselves, but you can’t put your quarterback in danger in practice,” Taylor said. “Joe is the leader of this team, and we’re always going to prioritize keeping him safe. I think Malik understands that now.”
For the Bengals, the scare was a reminder of how crucial Burrow’s health is to their season. The 2021 first overall pick has dealt with multiple setbacks in recent years, including a torn ACL as a rookie and a lingering calf strain last season. With Cincinnati’s Super Bowl aspirations hinging on his availability, every snap he takes in camp is handled with extra caution.
Turner, a third-round draft pick out of Alabama, reportedly apologized to Burrow and teammates after practice. Still, the incident highlighted the intensity of camp battles and the fine line between competing hard and crossing boundaries.
While the confrontation cooled quickly, the scene underscored just how protective the Bengals are of their star quarterback and how one moment of overexuberance can ignite tempers.
As Burrow continues preparing for Week 1, the team will hope the only sparks flying at practice from here on out are from crisp passes and sharp plays, not near-misses with injury.
