August 17, 2025 – Cincinnati Reds catcher Jose Trevino made headlines on Sunday after publicly expressing his frustration over his current role with the team, stating that he “needs to be promoted” following the Milwaukee Brewers’ impressive winning streak that has widened the gap in the NL Central race.
The comments came shortly after the Brewers extended their streak to seven straight wins, strengthening their hold on first place while the Reds continue to hover around .500. Trevino, who joined Cincinnati in the off season, has been splitting catching duties but believes his leadership and veteran experience warrant a larger role as the team looks to keep pace.
“I’m here to win games, and I know I can contribute more than I’ve been given the chance to,” Trevino told reporters in the clubhouse. “At this point, I need to be promoted into a role where I can help this team every day. Watching us fall behind while I’m sitting out isn’t easy.”
The 32-year-old backstop, known for his defensive skills and ability to work with pitchers, has posted modest offensive numbers this season. Still, teammates and coaches have praised his presence behind the plate and his steadying influence on the pitching staff. His push for a promotion appears to be as much about leadership as it is about playing time.
Manager David Bell was measured in his response, acknowledging Trevino’s passion while emphasizing the need for balance.
“We love Jose’s competitiveness,” Bell said. “He wants to play, and that’s what you want in a player. But decisions on roles are made with the team in mind, and we’ll continue to evaluate what puts us in the best position to win.”
Trevino’s remarks come at a critical moment for Cincinnati. The Brewers’ surge has put added pressure on the Reds, who are fighting not only to stay in contention for the division but also to remain in the thick of the Wild Card race.
