In a strategic move to bolster their outfield, the Cincinnati Reds have signed former Baltimore Orioles All-Star Austin Hays to a one-year, $5 million deal, with an additional $1 million in incentives. Hays, who spent most of his career with the Orioles before a brief stint with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024, brings a wealth of experience and power to the Reds’ lineup .
During his tenure with the Orioles, Hays showcased consistent performance, hitting .262 with 66 home runs and 242 RBIs over seven seasons. Despite a challenging 2024 season marred by injuries, including a calf strain and a kidney infection, Hays demonstrated resilience and potential, making him a valuable addition to the Reds .
In his early games with the Reds, Hays has made a significant impact. Notably, he hit two solo home runs in a 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies, marking his seventh career multi-homer game and bringing his batting average to .386 over 11 games .
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and Atlanta Braves missed opportunities to strengthen their rosters by not pursuing Hays. The Blue Jays, despite their competitive edge, did not capitalize on the chance to add a seasoned outfielder. The Orioles, having traded Hays mid-2024, did not re-sign him, potentially overlooking his value. The Braves, with their own outfield needs, also did not engage in talks with Hays, allowing the Reds to secure a promising talent at a reasonable cost.
As the season progresses, the Reds’ acquisition of Hays may prove to be a shrewd move, while the missed opportunities by the Blue Jays, Orioles, and Braves could be seen as significant oversights in their roster strategies.
