Collingwood Football Club and the wider AFL community are mourning the loss of Anthony Rocca, a club legend whose resilience and optimism inspired many. Rocca passed away following a courageous battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a diagnosis he received in July 2024.
The 47-year-old forward, known for his powerful presence on the field, had a distinguished 15-season career in the AFL, playing 242 games and kicking 415 goals with Collingwood and Sydney. After retiring in 2009, he transitioned into coaching, leading the Northern Knights in the Coates Talent League. Despite his diagnosis, Rocca continued to support his players, often attending training sessions and providing guidance during his chemotherapy treatments.
In December 2024, Rocca shared a hopeful update, announcing the completion of his chemotherapy and expressing optimism for the future. He acknowledged the support of his medical team at Epworth Hospital and his family, stating, “I am feeling great and looking forward to 2025.”
Rocca’s battle with cancer was marked by his unwavering positivity. He often said, “Even if there’s a quarter of a glass of water, I’ll still see it as half full,” reflecting his optimistic outlook on life.
His passing has left a profound impact on the AFL community. Former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire expressed the club’s deep affection for Rocca, stating, “We love him, he’s an absolute superstar.”
Rocca is survived by his wife, Enza, and their two children, Mia and Max. His legacy as a dedicated player, coach, and family man will continue to inspire future generations.
