In the aftermath of the San Francisco 49ers’ disappointing 47–24 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in their 2024 season finale, head coach Kyle Shanahan has initiated significant
roster changes, parting ways with two key players: linebacker De’Vondre Campbell and defensive tackle Arik Armstead.
De’Vondre Campbell’s tenure with the 49ers was marred by controversy. After signing a one-year contract in March 2024, Campbell started 12 of the first 13 games, filling in for the injured Dre Greenlaw. However, in a Week 15 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, Campbell refused to enter the game after losing his starting role, leading to his suspension for the remainder of the season. Coach Shanahan commented on the incident, stating, “Refusing to play is not something you can do to your team… and still be a part of it.”
Arik Armstead, a longtime stalwart on the 49ers’ defensive line, was released on March 13, 2024. Armstead had been a consistent presence since being drafted in 2015, but injuries limited his contributions in recent seasons. In the 2023 season, he played through a torn meniscus during the playoffs, which required surgery and caused him to miss significant offseason activities.
These roster moves are part of a broader strategy by Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to reset the team’s finances and focus on developing younger talent. The 49ers have experienced significant turnover this offseason, with notable departures including wide receiver Deebo Samuel, fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and several defensive starters.
The decision to part ways with Campbell and Armstead underscores the 49ers’ commitment to fostering a team culture centered on accountability and performance. As the organization looks ahead to the 2025 season, these changes signal a new chapter aimed at returning the team to playoff contention.
