Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman has been awarded the prestigious National Football Foundation (NFF) Gold Medal, the organization’s highest honor, recognizing his outstanding leadership, character, and contributions to the sport of football and society.
Presented annually since 1958, the Gold Medal honors individuals whose professional success and personal integrity serve as a model for the ideals of amateur athletics. Freeman, the 31st recipient in the award’s storied history, joins a distinguished list that includes U.S. Presidents, military leaders, and pioneering athletes.
Freeman, 39, has made a significant impact on and off the field since being named Notre Dame’s head coach in 2021. Under his leadership, the Fighting Irish have continued their tradition of excellence, while Freeman has emphasized the development of student-athletes as leaders, scholars, and citizens.
“Coach Freeman embodies everything the Gold Medal stands for—excellence, service, and the pursuit of greatness with humility,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. “His commitment to building men of character through the game of football is exactly what this award was created to honor.”
In addition to his coaching success, Freeman has championed community outreach and educational initiatives. He has served as a mentor and advocate for student-athletes, consistently reinforcing Notre Dame’s mission of balancing athletic achievement with academic rigor and moral responsibility.
Freeman’s journey—from standout linebacker at Ohio State to rising coaching star and leader of one of college football’s most storied programs—has earned admiration across the collegiate sports landscape.
“I’m deeply honored to receive this award,” Freeman said. “It reflects the incredible support of my family, staff, and the university. I share this with everyone who believes in the power of football to transform lives.”
The award will be formally presented at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York City later this year.
