As of May 20, 2025, outfielder Will Benson is not in the Cincinnati Reds’ lineup for their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds have optioned Benson back to Triple-A Louisville to continue his development. This move comes after Benson’s struggles during the 2024 season and his performance in spring training.

Benson had a challenging 2024 season, slashing .187/.274/.376 with 14 home runs, 43 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases over 128 games. He struck out 154 times, nearly 40% of his plate appearances. Despite showing promise in 2023 with an .863 OPS, Benson’s inconsistency at the plate led to his reassignment to Triple-A .

In spring training, Benson appeared in 13 games, batting .200 with two home runs but also accumulating 10 strikeouts and four walks. Reds manager Terry Francona noted that Benson needed more consistent at-bats to refine his approach before rejoining the major league roster .

The Reds’ outfield depth, bolstered by the additions of Austin Hays and Gavin Lux, provided the team with the flexibility to send Benson to the minors without disrupting the current lineup. Benson’s return to the majors will depend on his performance in Louisville and the team’s needs moving forward.

For now, Benson will focus on refining his swing and cutting down on strikeouts to earn another opportunity with the Reds later this season.
