IT IS DONE: Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell Invests $9.5 Million to Transform House into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Minneapolis

In a bold and heartwarming move that is making waves across the NFL and beyond, Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell has invested $9.5 million of his own funds to transform his personal residence into a state-of-the-art shelter for homeless youth in the Minneapolis area.

The 42-year-old coach, who has led the Vikings since 2022, announced the completion of the transformation project during a press conference on Monday. The shelter, which is now named “Second Chance House,” will officially open its doors next week.

“I’ve had the privilege of coaching some of the most talented athletes in the world,” O’Connell said during his address. “But nothing compares to helping a young person find stability, safety, and purpose when they need it most.”

The facility will house up to 40 youth between the ages of 15 and 21, many of whom have aged out of the foster care system or experienced chronic homelessness. The shelter includes sleeping quarters, mental health support services, career training programs, a learning center, and a gymnasium.

O’Connell’s decision to use his home—an expansive estate in the suburbs of Minneapolis—has stunned and inspired many. The residence has been completely reconfigured to serve its new mission.

“He didn’t just write a check,” said Marsha Laird, director of the Minnesota Youth Services Alliance. “He gave up his home. He gave up privacy. He gave up convenience. He’s sending a message that youth are worth that—and more.”

O’Connell began the project quietly in late 2024 after attending a youth outreach event where he spoke with homeless teens and young adults. Several shared harrowing stories of survival and hopelessness, prompting O’Connell to seek direct, lasting solutions.

He approached local nonprofits and city officials with the idea, and soon mobilized a team of architects, social workers, and volunteers. Renovations began early this year and were completed ahead of schedule thanks to strong community support and private donations that followed O’Connell’s lead.

“We have NFL owners who buy yachts. Kevin O’Connell built a home for kids with nowhere to go,” said ESPN analyst Marcus Spears. “It’s beyond football.”

The shelter will be staffed by licensed professionals and supported by a rotating group of volunteers, including members of the Vikings organization. O’Connell says several players have already signed up to mentor youth and host weekly life skills sessions.

“We’re not just offering a roof,” O’Connell said. “We’re offering hope, dignity, and a real path forward.”

Vikings owner Zygi Wilf commended his head coach’s dedication, stating: “Kevin is the embodiment of leadership—on and off the field. His actions have made all of us better.”

The grand opening ceremony for Second Chance House is scheduled for Friday, with expected attendance from NFL players, city leaders, and youth advocates.
