SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame guard Hannah Hidalgo has been named the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Player of the Week following a dominant performance that led the Fighting Irish to a marquee victory over rival UConn.
The sophomore sensation put on a show in front of a national audience, racking up 29 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals in Notre Dame’s 82–74 win over the Huskies. Her relentless energy and versatility on both ends of the floor made her the driving force behind the upset and cemented her status as one of the premier guards in women’s college basketball.
Hidalgo’s performance marked her third double-double of the season and her highest scoring output in conference play. Her playmaking and defensive pressure were key in disrupting UConn’s rhythm, particularly in the second half, when she scored 17 of her 29 points.
“She’s the heart of our team,” said Notre Dame head coach Niele Ivey. “What she brings to the court—competitiveness, leadership, and intensity—is unmatched. This award is well-deserved.”
Hidalgo’s breakout season has propelled Notre Dame into national title conversations. She currently leads the ACC in steals per game and ranks in the top five in scoring and assists. Her development from a freshman standout to a nationally recognized leader has been a major storyline this season.
With the postseason approaching, Hidalgo’s recognition by the AP only adds momentum to the Fighting Irish, who are eyeing a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
The honor marks the first time this season that Hidalgo has received the national weekly award, but it likely won’t be the last if she continues to perform at this level. Notre Dame next faces Louisville on Thursday in a key conference matchup.
